Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 1, 2026
This policy explains how Burning Vocabulary handles information when you use our Microsoft Edge extension, other supported browser extensions, website, dashboard, and related vocabulary-learning services.
Information we handle
We handle only the information needed to provide the vocabulary-learning features you choose to use:
- Learning content. Words or text you ask us to define, translate, save, or review, together with related learning data such as timestamps, custom definitions, and review progress.
- Optional context. When enabled, a saved word may include the sentence in which it appeared and the URL of that page. You can turn off sentence and URL storage in the dashboard settings. We do not collect your complete browsing history.
- Account and settings data. A service-generated identifier, language and feature settings, notification preferences, and, if you provide it for registration, licensing, purchase, or support, your email address.
- Technical data. Information needed to operate and secure the service, such as extension and browser version, extension ID, request time, and ordinary server request data.
The extension may examine webpage text locally to find and highlight saved words or to process text you expressly select for a definition or translation. We do not monitor general keystrokes, scrolling, or unrelated clicks. PDF files opened with the local viewer are processed on your device and are not uploaded as files.
How we use information
We use this information only to provide and maintain Burning Vocabulary, including returning definitions and translations, saving and synchronizing vocabulary, showing saved-word highlights, calculating review progress, sending optional review reminders, managing licenses and purchases, providing support, preventing abuse, and improving reliability.
When information is sent or shared
Data is transmitted over HTTPS when an online feature requires it. Saved vocabulary, optional context, account settings, and review data are sent to Burning Vocabulary servers so they can be synchronized and made available in the dashboard.
When you request a definition, translation, subtitle translation, or pronunciation, the requested word or text and language settings may be sent to a supported dictionary, translation, or pronunciation provider solely to return that result. Our website uses Google Analytics to understand aggregate website usage. Purchases are processed by payment providers such as Gumroad or supported WeChat payment services; they process payment details under their own privacy policies, while Burning Vocabulary may receive and retain limited order information such as an email address, order or license identifier, product, price, and payment status.
We do not sell user data, use it for advertising, use it for purposes unrelated to Burning Vocabulary's vocabulary-learning service, or use it to determine creditworthiness or for lending.
Your choices and controls
- You can disable storage of sentence context and source-page URLs in the dashboard settings.
- You can block the extension from operating on selected websites by using the site blacklist.
- You can disable review notifications and other optional features in the settings.
- You can view and delete saved words from the vocabulary dashboard.
- You may contact us to request access to or deletion of account-associated information, subject to legal and security requirements.
Storage and retention
Extension settings and cached data may be stored in Microsoft Edge local or sync storage. Service data is retained while needed to provide the requested features, maintain the account or license, meet legal obligations, resolve disputes, and protect the service. Deleted vocabulary is removed from the active vocabulary list. Backup and security records may remain for a limited period.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards, including HTTPS for data transmitted between the extension and online services. No method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure.
Children's privacy
Burning Vocabulary is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, please contact us so we can take appropriate action.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when our features or data practices change. The latest version and its update date will be posted on this page.
